Make a simple item list
Group the things you would like to donate by type and make a short list. Include size and condition for larger items, and note any missing parts. This makes it easier to ask a receiving location a specific question.
Follow any preparation instructions the organization gives you. Keep the contents of boxes easy to identify and separate anything the location has not agreed to accept. Do not use a general category in a directory as confirmation for a particular item.
Confirm with the location, not just the brand
Contact the exact location you plan to use. Ask whether it currently accepts your items in their condition, whether there are quantity or size limits, and whether an appointment is needed. Check donation hours separately from shopping hours.
If you need pickup, ask the organization directly about availability, the collection area, any charges and the agreed handoff location. A directory listing does not reserve a pickup.
- Are these specific items accepted in their current condition?
- What are the donation hours and drop-off instructions?
- Do I need an appointment or help unloading?
- If pickup is offered, what arrangements must I confirm?
- Is there anything I should do before packing the items?
Keep the handoff straightforward
Pack according to the receiving location’s instructions, and keep any details you were given handy. If circumstances change or the location cannot accept an item, take it away and ask about another appropriate option.
Do not leave donations outside a closed location unless the organization has explicitly directed you to an authorized drop-off arrangement. A final check before you travel can save you an extra journey.
